Digital Kaleidoscopes- radial design
What is radial design or symmetry? Radial design: having similar parts regularly arranged around a central axis that seem to radiate outwards. Please see the samples of digital kaleidoscopes. It will be your job to go on the internet and find 4 images: 1 pattern, 1 animal, and 2 choice. Take the higher quality picture and put it in your student folder. Next go to Photoshop and create a new file. File> new Name the file but use your name like so: Bob B radial design Set the file size to 8 inches height, 8 inches width, and resolution 120 THEN click enter. See reference picture here. Next from your student folder drag and drop 1 image to the photoshop file that you would like to make a Kaleidoscope. Using the polygonal lasso tool select a pie chunk. To close the polygonal lasso tool double click quickly. Once you have a nice pie chunk selected go to edit to copy and paste the pie chunk. Next turn off the original layer with the image. Go to your move tool (hotkey v) and then move the pie chunk around. Try transforming it by rotating it and changing the scale. You know have all the tools to be able to make your own radial design project in photoshop. MOST Important thing to do: Please make sure your file is saved to your student folder. You should know how to do this now and if you are having issues please get help from a student who knows how to do this step. |
Helpful tips:
If you can't do anything you might have an active transformation, which means you need to hit enter or check to confirm it. If you are having issues with the polygonal selection tool try Select> deselect and try again. If you are having layer issues make sure the layer you are working with is highlighted blue. Please make sure your file is saved to your student folder. |
Personal symbols
What role do symbols play in defining a person's identity? Can symbols have multiple meanings?
Everyone searches for and finds his or her own identity through a wide variety of experiences and expressions. Often a system of personal symbols can express that identity. Artists may construct a private symbolic language in order to talk about themselves or to grapple with the world's injustices and challenges.
Your task it to design your own personal symbol on paper then draw it using a tablet in PhotoShop.
